Golden Wing Mau Report on cherries Week 25, 2015

The mood in week 25 improved on the back of Dragon Boat Festival at the end of the week. Promotions and gift bags became more visible on public transport systems as people purchase to share with their families. Gift friendly products benefitted in particular, U.S.A cherries being one of the fruits heavily supported by the additional demand.

Week 25’s weather remained quite similar to week 24, with temperatures staying in the high twenties and thirties. This included south, east as well as more northern parts of China, with Beijing experiencing rare clear blue skies enjoyed by all. South China will however not be as fortunate in week 25 as a typhoon approaches the region bringing with it heavy thunder showers throughout the week.

Cherries saw positive movement during the week due to Dragon Boat Festival bringing additional demand. Bing became the most dominant variety in the market in week 25, with Benton, Santina, Skeena as well as limited Rainier all on offer.

Most of the Bing available on the market could find good movement in the range ¥440-450 (9.5R, 5kg), with the best quality produce showing consistent colouration coupled with limited concerns able to move at ¥480 and upwards. Santina showing good condition with constant glossy finish was able to find movement at between ¥500-520 (9.5R). These prices up by between ¥30-60 compared to week 24. Benton variety received more favorable prices overall compared to Bing as buyers noted the variety has more firmness to touch, and although the cherry shows a more bright red colouration, it is consistent with colouration compared to the more mixed colour seen in Bing. Benton was able to find movement when priced between ¥450-480 (9.5R). Week 26 likely to see price drops as demand from Dragon Boat Festival evaporates.
